Strings characteristics can be determined by 2 main things. Tension and string type. This page will hopefully give a basic understanding of the characteristics, and thus make it easier for you to make a choice on strings in the future!
If you search for tennis strings one the right sites, you will find that there are about 1000 different strings to choose from. The main types of strings are Polyesters, Monofilaments, Synthetic gut and natural gut. Each of these has their merits, and it is up to you to decide what you fancy in your racquet, both colour wise, and characteristic wise.
Made from actual horse gut. Normal colour. Plays like a dream. However, will be dead in about 2 hours play, and is supremely expensive. Fed plays with it though, so it’s pretty sexy
Cheaper than 5 chicken wings from viallis. Similar rubbery texture to those wings. Tonnes of power, more expensive ones have quite a bit of control as well. Pretty easy to snap if you know what you’re doing. Generally, only come in white or black.
Last longer than Ollie Heaths dry spell. Medium price, though better ones can be pricy: like alcohol. Not a huge amount of power, loads of spin however, decent control. Come in a huge array of colours, to jazz up your racquet.
More powerful polys, don’t last as long, but provide nice compromise between power and durability. On the expensive side of polys: if it was an alcoholic drink, it would be Kopparberg: generally enjoyed by everyone, but too pricy to be used all the time
Generally, the tighter te strings, the more control you have, and when timed correctly, they provide suitable power
Looser strings provide more spin and power, but can be like playing with a lacrosse net, and can make accuracy a real problem.
Ultimately, everyone’s preferences are different, talk to our stringers to find out more.
This Comes with a a huge caveat: what works in general may not work for you: Tennis is always a compromise. Think of it this way, its like a night at pop: you have to get the right mix of purple, jagerbombs and “you can call me Al” or you are gonna wake up with a monster headache or have had a shite night.
