Term 1 Week 6
While Reading Week may have sent the average BA student packing, Warwick Tennis still managed to have a massive week thanks to our dedicated members and the massive success of This Girl Can week! We’d like to thank everyone who dedicated their time to help us out in taking part of this fantastic campaign for the first time alongside Warwick Sport and Sport England in order to encourage girls to stay active and involved in sport (or the most important sport, tennis).
It was tough luck for the women’s teams this week as 1s travelled to Peterborough to play Cambridge 1s in a very poorly heated bubble and unfortunately lost 4-8 despite excellent form all round. The Women’s 2s also suffered a 4-8 loss to top of the league Nottingham Trent. However there were some standout performances from our outstanding fresh including a doubles win from dream team Malina and Saskia followed by a singles win by match MVP Saskia that left her in tears … because she was so hungry after claiming the victory. This upcoming week the ladies have no matches and will instead be spending their Wednesday nursing hangovers following the girl’s cocktail crawl Tuesday night (details below).
Results were mixed on the men’s side this week as Men’s 1s fared better than the women against Cambridge playing at home and winning 8-4. However, the 2s played Loughborough and ultimately succumbed 2-10. Finally, the 3s managed to make their lengthy trip out to East Anglia worth it with a smashing 12-0 cup victory that included Peter’s big debut match, meaning they now advance to the next round! The big highlight of BUCS Wednesday was thanks to Abdul who managed to smash his opponent 6-0 6-0 in just 40 minutes, reports of him being a quick finisher are clearly true. Men's 1s will be playing at Oxford away this week, however the 2s and 3s will be playing at home so if you're around stop by and cheer on the teams as the 2s take of Loughborough 3s and the 3s take on Coventry 1s!
Whilst on the topic of teams, Tennis FC managed to reverse last weeks score and bag themselves a very comfortable 3-0 win despite the odds against us, with Patrick having missed a penalty, and an open goal, as well as a very 'interesting' ref! This week sees their last game of the term so get down and play or support them!
This Girl Can week saw a large increase in the number of girls at Social Play with the Wednesday session opened as a taster. The session included an hour of girl’s only court time led by Social Play’s own Hattie who quoted the girl’s only court was “a fun good way of meeting people”.
However the high point of This Girl Can week was achieved Sunday with an incredibly popular Cardio Tennis session that ran during the first hour of indoor Social Play. Thanks to some brilliant leadership by Tennis Ambassador Harriet, over 20 girls - many new to the club - enjoyed an hour of dynamic games, drills, and being yelled at by grumpy elderly men before heading off to join Social Play and try their hand at reverse eliminator and bluff.
Bring Your Own Vessel circle this week saw a large increase in new circlers and some highly creative vessel choices! Top circlers with the most inventive vessels are Dan Wiley with his plastic bin and Alice who drank out of a ceramic cow. Worst vessel choice is Ollie (what would an exec blog be without a shout out to Heath) who nearly poisoned himself after 3 hours of spraying soapy purple into his mouth. This week’s circle promises to be eventful and will be one you won’t want to miss as everyone will be divided into families in order to partake in a number of challenges and games. You don’t want to be left out of a family so you won’t want to miss circle this week! Also Warwick Tennis will be taking part in Warwick Pride Week and Kick Homophobia out of sport and so for circle this week we ask everyone to wear a different colour of the rainbow – Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Violet only please!
Finally we hope to continue on the success of this week with a girl’s cocktail crawl on Tuesday, circle on Wednesday of course, and finally Tour Launch on Friday. If you’ve heard rumours of the legends of tour this will be an event you won’t want to miss - or if you’re a big fan of Kasbah the Tennis Club will be selling tickets for £3 so let us know if you’re interested! This week has a bit of something for everyone so make sure you’re around and we look forward to seeing you all!
We will likely be having some more Cardio Tennis sessions in the future thanks to the success of Sunday so if you enjoyed the day please stay involved and check out what else we have to offer! The highly successful session included fantastic music by tennis’ resident radio host Crawford and cake from Birthday girl Hattie (who still owes us a strawpedo)!
It was an active week for the club and Tuesday included two non-drinking socials with a number of girls attending Warwick Sport’s Box/Skip/Fit class held in Desso Hall and showing off their superior fitness levels thanks to regular bleep tests while the rest of the club headed to the Deep South for a rigorous night of bowling. While Hornsey claims the real winner of the Bowling Social was tennis, rumours have circulated that Cameron won the night with a score around 150 and Peter with the fastest throw of 24.82mph, while Social Secs Jamie and Ivan proved that their particular skills are more suited for the inside of a circle rather than a bowling lane.
