Term 1 Hightlights
Hope the holidays have been going swimmingly and you’re all excited for another term with more tennis, more socials and more banter than ever before. To get you all in the mood, we will be looking through the highlights of the term gone by so you have idea of what you can expect UWTC to serve up this term. So without further delay, here’s our top 8 highlights of Term Unos.
8 - TOUR LAUNCH
Tour is love, tour is life. The road to paradise begins every year at Tour Launch where our dream location is revealed. The enthusiasm on display by members on this night is one that only promise of an all-inclusive bar and Tennis In The Sun can provide. This year, part-time Tour Sec and full-time ladies’ man Mike “Chirpsinho” Simmons took prospective tourers through some of Leamington’s finest watering holes. Challenges ranging from boat races to charades were set and in an unprecedented, ground-breaking announcement that no one saw coming, it was announced that Tour 2k17 would be in Magaluf (Mallorca for the more refined ones amongst us).
One wonders how Simmo got the idea of organising a trip to this exotic location (Tilsley, 2015) but it promises to be a great week. We would end the night by venturing into Coventry, the home of those less fortunate (Coventry University - Winners of 2016 Car Boot Sale of the Year) and dominating Kazzy B the way only UWTC can.
7 - ADOPTIONS
Term 1 is an exciting time for everyone, Freshers and Returners alike. Once the Fresh have settled in and decided they don’t like half of their flatmates that much anyway, the sensible ones decide to throw themselves head on into getting involved in a sports club. Adoptions provided the first of many opportunities to do so and was exciting for the old and young uns amongst us. It gave a chance for the captains and Internal Events duo to indoctrinate the new cohort of UWTC. This was a dream come true for a captain like Martin Slater who attended more socials than fitness sessions as a fresher (he didn’t attend many socials) as he set about deciding how to make this a memorable night for the boys.
Hayley ensured the girls had just as much fun before the club assembled at the bandstand to pledge their allegiance to the crest. Crawford’s poetic fervour was there for all to see as he recited those now famous words before we proceeded to a club wide circle in Altoria followed by some cray dance moves in The Assembly Rooms.
6 - BYOF CIRCLE
Week 3, along with adoptions also saw the biggest circle in recent memory where somewhere between 90 and a thousand people attended Tennis’ fresher circle. We literally and metaphorically dominated the Copper Rooms (much to the annoyance of several SU staff, other sports clubs and just the general populace.) The social secs had their work cut out but pulled through with aplomb. Numbers were counted, symbols were displayed and Purple was consumed as Freshers were introduced to the art of Circle. What followed was another serving of Midweek Mayhem as Disco Dave (Colin if you are mates) put on some classics as shapes were thrown and shirts were waved.
5 - THIS GIRL CAN WEEK
Working closely in conjunction with Warwick Sport, Warwick Tennis opened its doors to all female students to try get more girls playing sport at university. Despite the strong turnout at taster sessions, female involvement has tended to drop in sport across the university as term has progressed. For this Girl Can Week, both our weekly sessions were free for girls regardless of membership. In addition, we had for the first time in my memory, free cardio tennis on Sunday night, as unbelievable groundstrokes were hit to sound the hottest mixtapes of 2016. Add to this the girls’ cocktails night, and you’ve got the target market covered.
Before term started, Internal Events extraordinaire James Crawford shared his vision for the club with me. This Girl Can Week at UWTC was in part realisation of his dream.
4 - BUCS
If one were to look at the individual BUCS rankings at sports across Warwick, you would find Tennis, to no one’s surprise at number 1, comfortably ahead of any other sport. This is possible both due to the high standard of tennis across the university as well as the relentless performance of our 5 BUCS teams. Whether it’s the girls knocking the stuffing out of Cov multiple times over the course of the term or the boys now being on the verge of promotion to the Premier North division, this term has seen some very impressive performances.
Varsity this year has been once again confirmed as a home fixture, which once again means a great weekend is in store as we look to secure another set of comfortable 12-0 wins so that our opponents can go back to stacking shelves in B&Q in quick time. There will be loads more promo through term so keep your eyes peeled, think Davis Cup but better.
3 - FRESHERS WEEK
Once pre-season had over, the curtain was raised on another year at Warwick and what a first week it was. Everyone’s finest chirpse was on display on Tuesday at Fresher’s fair as we chatted to the Freshers about joining UWTC in all its glory. Their interest was adequately aroused as over 300 people/future club ledges signed up for our mailing list (it was just Pete’s way of trying to score some phone numbers). The talented (or those who thought they were) signed up for trial slots, the casual connoisseurs got ready for some waves and bluff and it was just the beginning to a great week.
The taster sessions had what could only be described as a UKIP nightmare as a swarm of new faces descended upon our club, with their different grips and varying birth years. The tennis club’s exit from the university was averted by the charismatic leadership of James “Decent Lad” Crawford and Hattie “Please sir, may I have some more” Goodhart as they ran some impeccable sessions. Crawford/Hattie for PM/Pres! Team trials were conducted through the week, and due to the incredibly high standard, our captains had to turn a fair few trialists away, with some dealing with the news significantly worse than others. To cap off a great week, we had an info evening with free pizza and tasty beerz/soft drinks to give our new members a chance to meet the old crew. Add in the fair snapchat filter and the introduction of a new weekly session, a successful start to the year.
2 - MYSTERY DOM TOUR
Tour supremo Mikey “On a church” Simmons had our location tightly sealed away in a safe at the bottom of the ocean, and despite rumours of trip to Dublin or Manchester, the location was revealed to be sunny/not rainy/sometimes overcast Liverpool. After a coach journey that featured some excellent Beatles renditions and the occasional beverage, we got to our hostel ready to go. Our fancy dress was a great hit with the locals and also helped spot any stragglers who were lost or ready to call it a night. After sampling some of the infamous “quad-vods” of the North in a few bars, we finished the night in Baa Bar.
I wish I could paint more of a picture for you but it was a bar in Liverpool with cheap drinks, that is all that can be said. We recovered the next day with some scram in the hostel followed by some electing to watch football and the sportier ones electing to play some high octane mini golf. Old boy and everyone’s favourite guest circler Matthew Barbara Jones was making a special appearance this weekend and particularly enjoyed this activity. On night 2, after preing in our rooms and grabbing some drinks on the way, we proceeded towards Level, the club cleverly named for its multiple levels. As is the case with Tennis, we inevitably ended up in the Cheese room and threw some unbelievable shapes. For those who hadn’t got their pop fix, as a special treat for all their fans, the night ended with Jonesy and V singing cost free for the girls in their room in what has since been described as the second coming of Wham! The next day we got the coach to return to the relative normalcy of Campus and Leamington.
1 - OLD BOYS WEEKEND
The highlight of the term was the Old Boys Weekend, from Friday onwards, the club hosted the old men and women (has-beens) from the years gone by. The weekend commenced with the quintessential tennis social from yesteryears: A bad curry followed by Kelsey’s (Kelsey’s Live: Bar and Club for you Freshers). We all got the chance to catch up and witness first-hand how these semi-functioning students had become fully-functioning human beings. On Saturday morning, fierce battle began for one of UWTC’s most prestigious crowns, the annual Old Boys Mini Tennis Championship. Competition was cut-throat, with some of the graduates displaying fine form.
Alex and Jirv had cumulatively lost the weight of an entire person between them as their lack of weekly purple dosage had propelled them to new tennising heights. Representing the current crop of UWTC stars was one-time Matchday Social Sec Pete, serving the way only he can. However, it was reigning champion And1 Smithy Smith who showed the only thing Mongo likes more than tour was mini-tennis, edging Pete in the final. Throw in the bake sale and the money raised for our charity, Guide Dogs for the Blind, the Westwood Tennis Centre was the go-to venue in the midlands that day.
Circle on Saturday night was one of the largest of the term as we had downstairs Kelsey’s packed. It was a circle hard to match with a bit of everything in the mix, including stints from all graduated social secs. The oldies were given one final chance to relive their younger days as we went to Skool Dayz to takeover tennis corner and ended the night in protest shirt waving at the lack of any Baywatch being played. All in all, a great few days to rounded off by breakfast the next day. Until next year!
This is just term 1, we have got a tonne of stuff planned for all of you this term.
For starters, POP/Circling tickets go on sale midday on January 4th.
Other things to look out for this term include Varsity, Charity Mini Tennis, Mixed Doubles Tournament, Awards Dinner, Tour Social, Kasbah and many more. Keep your eyes on the Facebook group, more details will be revealed shortly.
For those wishing to get more involved or those who have been unsure about joining, it’s not at all late, feel free to drop by to one of our sessions or just message the Facebook page. A happy new year to everyone and see you soon for another massive term!
