Term 2 Week 1
Welcome to Term 2, Warwick Tennis! We have a
fantastic term lined up for everyone, with
everything from a backwards circle (whatever
on earth that is) to the legendary Varsity
competition, to the even more legendary tour!
The first event of Week 1 was of course the
fantastic social play! With the majority (myself
included) not having played tennis for 4 weeks,
the standard of play was surprisingly
impressive, with top notch performances in a
classic session of waves, eliminator, around the world and bluff. The session was open to newbies, so we met a few new faces, always a pleasure.
The men’s team had a rest this week, but are training hard for their first matches on the 24th, so we’re expecting big things. For the women’s 1st team, they were straight back to business on Wednesday, playing a cup match against Manchester Metropolitan. It’s safe to say the girls pulled this one out the bag with a 12-0 victory, with Alice Wenner having a tough singles battle as well. They even finished early because the opposition ‘were so bad’ there was no point continuing, according to savage captain Grace.
After Wednesday’s tennis filled day, we all
decided to slytherin the copper rooms for
everyone’s favourite part of the week: circle!
This week was Harry Potter themed and
everyone was Siriusly excited. Cam-Ron had
upped their strictness level by not allowing
anyone to sit where they wanted (how
ridikkulus), instead being sorted into houses
by the one and only sorting hat. With games
such as ‘One Hogwarts Wizard’ and Harry
Potter houses Big Four, there was nothing Ron
with the circle at all. Daniel was banished to
Azkaban and rumour has it that by the end of
the night, Kraven asked Lauren to huffle his
puff. Birthday boy Ben Attle had a huge night
(and apparently it was James Dawson’s birthday too, kept that one quiet…). Battle wasn’t seen after Baywatch, and allegedly spending the whole night in various places around campus, even making a trip to Tesco. He had some tremendous moments including chundering over the barrier so subtly that only two people saw (how?!) and falling off his chair and rolling over the table onto the floor during Angels…Happy birthday Ben!
For UWTFC, they were back in action against the dreaded Maths and Stats. Despite the absence of many key players, a grand effort was displayed by all, however they sadly lost 3-1to a well-drilled opposition outfit. On the upside, massive crowds gathered to watch (two freezing cold supporters who left after the first half), so not all was lost.
Being the multi-talented club we are, a two (and a half) teams of Warwick Tennis’ finest entered the charity table tennis tournament on Sunday. Greg Clarke showed immense competence and despite being hampered by their Achilles Heel Clement Ehall, his team also featuring Ronak and Crawford went on to win the plate, beating the crowd favourite team of Ollie, Arjun, Harry and Hattie in a dramatic semi-final encounter.
To everyone’s excitement (mainly mine), social play was INDOORS on Sunday!!!!!!!!! As usual, Ryan and Annabel led a world-class session of 20+1, eliminator, Alex Matthews and bluff. Clement followed by leading a mesmerisingly well-attended matchplay, also inside, featuring some cracking doubles wherever you looked. We’re looking forward to seeing many of you next week for more social play, matches and circle!
See you next week!
Love the exec xoxo
