TERM 1 WEEK 2
How we doing, tennis? Your Women’s Captain is here and ready to divulge all on what went on in Week 2.
Following a huge turn out to our 2nd social play taster on the Sunday, hype and excitement grew for the coming week. Wednesday would see yet another circle, social play, tiramisu bribes for supporters, and the first BUCS matches. Friday would see fresh be freshly “welcomed” on a very innocent team night out, Saturday would see those who had survived bRiDgE thE gAp with social players for a Browntrust Skool Dayz, and Sunday would finish off two weeks of solid tasters with tasting pizza.
After another 7am and 7.30am Monday and Tuesday starts (which is not getting easier as the weeks go on, despite what you might expect) ((some words included “I’m grieving for myself”, “I hate myself”, “I don’t want to”, and “no”)), the girls were feeling solid for a big BUCS Wednesday opener. Facing the 1s were Oxford 3s, and the 2s would consequently go up against Leicester 1s.
The teams assembled. For the firsts? Our Pole with a Goal, Julka. The Cornish Hornet, Arielle. Craving some mad pace, Grace. And yours truly. Some hours later, all walked off court with an emphatic 12-0 win, celebrating a clean victory with 4 bagels and 3 breadsticks.
For the seconds? Rachael “I Club It” Moon, Ines (now rebranded “Dropshot Lob”) after a strong game plan, the Italian Stallion Carlotta, and Vice-Capt Hazza T. While the stars didn’t completely line up for the 2nds, falling 10-2, it wasn’t for a powerful performance by each player individually and together, and it certainly could have been a slightly different result if, you know, we all followed the “if it’s on the line, the ball is fine” mindset.
Next up, the women’s teams go off campus, away from the fortress, to tackle De Montfort (who?) and Birmingham 2s.
Only one men’s team was in action on Wednesday, with the 3rds pulling off a massive draw against Birmingham 1s - asserting our dominance as the best tennis club in the West Midlands (East Mids are unnecessary, we don’t need to talk about Lough and Notts ok).
While the rest of the big lads weren’t in action, this week they take center stage: Men’s 1s away at Nottingham vs their 3rd team (despite the fact you’re a Troyless team now, you got this), Men’s 2s are at home vs Cambridge 1s (we all know they had Warwick as their insurance anyway), and Men’s 3s are also at home vs Loughborough 3s (I smell underdog victory) - if you’re hitting up social play, you know what to do - get to Westwood for another sweet Clement surprise (he has enough time to be making applestrudel, someone get the guy a gal).
So on went Week 3 (sorry, this is going to be SO long, I AM A LIT STUDENT) with a team welcome event on Friday night!!!!!!!! Wow, such a sweet, innocent, and pure way to incorporate our fresh to the teams.
Needless to say, I do have videos of what couldn’t quite make Instagram live (basically the entire women’s squad getting off with a tennis ball while “tennis ball bobbing”), and if team members aren’t quite committed enough...I have my resources.
The following morning, Berry was ready for “the gym, maybe a sauna too” at 10am, and Grace’s house no longer had egg anywhere in it, so recovery was under way - this meant it was time for the heavyweights amongst us to get ready for Skool Dayz.
Some things that happened during the first Skool Dayz of term included:
“Jake Fallon stole a microwave”
“Maddie Zulu fell off a chair”
“Jamie Brown implemented a seating plan”
All in all, a pretty good night with a large focus on encouraging Dom Tour participation - if you want more of the Browntrust vibes, tickets are on sale s o o n.
Following the second big Warwick Tennis social night of the weekend, the planned social-and-match play duo got called off due to rain (hey international freshers and welcome to the UK, RIP your plans to do anything outside ever). Instead, the only form of tennis entertainment that afternoon (aside from Novak Djokovic becoming World #2 again and winning Shanghai) was FREE pizza. Obviously this was a pretty low key event, as Clement only posted about it 495867 times, but many exec members were met and many fresh were sold on tennis.
Hope to see you all at circle on Wednesday – Freshers wear white!!
